The Forward Festival for Creativity, Design and Communication took place in Hamburg for the first time this July. After I visited it in Munich in May, was enthusiastic about the festival and Hamburg is my second home at the moment, I didn't want to miss it. 1,000 visitors and a backdrop of superlatives: the Millerntor stadium. The home of FC St. Pauli. As a designer and football fan, you can't find many better places for a festival.
20 speakers talking about their philosophy, processes, projects and mistakes. Among them big names like Droga5 from New York, who gave interesting insights into their process and presented projects for Google and Under Amour, or the creative office Stockholm Design Lab, who presented us a best-of of their rich portfolio.
Erik Kessels, the Dutch creative director and co-founder of the Amsterdam agency Kesselskramer calls on creative people to make mistakes, be patient and see this process as an opportunity for innovation. In addition to presenting projects for the city of Amsterdam, Citizen M Hotels or the NRW FORUM Düsseldorf, Kessels also spoke about his own failures, how they inspired him and how projects developed from them in a very entertaining and authentic presentation. After the lecture there was the opportunity to purchase and have his book "Failed It" signed by.
Stefan Sagmeister and the beautiful. The Austrian, who lives in New York and is co-founder and creative director of Sagmeister & Walsh, talked about the importance of beauty and aesthetics for society. Using examples from science, history and architecture, among others, he showed why beauty works better and that beautiful surroundings and beautiful things not only influence how we feel but also how we behave. At the end of the lecture there was of course the well-known group singing.
After the event we visited the Millerntor GALLERY, which took place at the same time as the Forward Festival. This art, music and culture festival, which was initiated by Viva con Agua and FC St. Pauli, gives contemporary artists the chance to present their work. What should be mentioned at this point: 70% of the event proceeds from the sale of art are donated to water and education projects of Viva con Agua de St. Pauli e.V.
