Barriers for people with disabilities will still be a major issue in 2018. Although their reduction is now more frequently under discussion than just a few years ago, comprehensive approaches to accessibility are still lacking. This is reason enough to launch a competition under the patronage of Unitymedia in cooperation with the Sozialhelden e.V. around Raul Krauthausen and the Impact Hub Berlin, which focuses on this topic. The Digital Imagination Challenge is about projects that promote accessibility through the use of digital technologies. We participated in this challenge with → Deaf Magazine.
Together with → Morphoria DC, we are working on an editorial concept that gives deaf people easier access to written language. Using an app and augmented reality, printed editorial content is digitally enhanced with additional content - from small videos explaining individual words in sign language to fully signed and subtitled editorial articles.
The technology: The codes incorporated in the printed content are automatically recognized and the video is superimposed on the printed content at the right place using Augmented Reality. Thanks to this system, deaf people can not only record editorial content with less stress, they can also deal with more complex issues and thus participate more in social discourse.
With this approach we started in Berlin, achieved second place and thus secured one of the coveted sponsorship awards. The funding will now enable us to develop the app to market maturity. This is another milestone in our goal of bringing → Deaf Magazine to life in the long term on the basis of an inclusion-oriented business model.
We would like to thank Christian Hindenach, CCO of Unitymedia, in addition to the whole team around the DIC-Challenge.
